The Cartographic Feature File (CFF) Vintage 11 data
is an electronic version of the U.S. Forest Service primary
base series (PBS) maps which are developed from the U.S.
Geological Survey (USGS) 7.5 minute topographic map series
with enhancements and revisions to satisfy Forest Service
needs and are constructed to meet National Map Accuracy
Standards (NMAS). This data includes all the features
except the contour lines. The West Virginia GIS Tech Center has converted the files into ArcInfo interchange format (.e00) and zipped them for dowload.
The CFF Vintage 11 data were intended for updating the
primary base series and for generating secondary base
series maps. They provide basic planimetric map features
from a single standard source to which resource data can be
registered and to provide CFF data to USGS for inclusion in
the National Digital Cartographic Database.
None.
For use at 1:24000 scale or smaller
All attributes entered during the creation process were
verified by displaying the lines in both the database and
spatial coverage.
These data are believed to be logically consistent, though
no tests were performed. Line geometry is topologically clean.
CFF specifications are provided in Forest Service
Engineering manual (EM) 7140-21. You can also visit the
GSTC web site at www.fs.fed.us/gsc.
The horizontal positional accuracy of the CFF reflects the
nature of the source PBS map. PBS maps are compiled to meet
National Map Accuracy Standards (NMAS). For the horizontal
component, the NMAS states that 90 percent of well-defined
points on a map fall within a specified distance of the
actual position on the ground -- 1/50th of an inch at map
scale for 1:24000- and 1:63360-scale. CFFs are estimated to
contain a horizontal positional accuracy of less than or
equal to 0.005 inches in one direction relative to the
source graphic. The source graphic is used to assess
digital positional accuracy.

CFFs are collected by digitizing map features shown on
Primary Base Series (PBS) maps. Line and Point features are
described by X-Y coordinate pairs and attribued using a
Feature Code scheme. CFFs are formatted according to the
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) quadrangle convention.
