Coal Fields of the United States Text Mode Coal Fields of the United States: Map Layer Description File This map layer portrays areas that contain significant coal deposits for Alaska and the lower 48 States of United States. The layer contains the name of the coal field or region, the type of coal and if it is minable. The types of coal included are lignite, bituminous, subbituminous, and anthracite. The Department of Energy Fossil Fuels education site has information about the types of coal. Download this map layer in Shapefile format. Download this map layer in SDTS format. Metadata What follows is very detailed technical information about this map layer. This is often called metadata. Metadata (or "data about data") describe the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics of data. Metadata are used to organize and maintain investments in data, to provide information to data catalogs and clearinghouses, and to aid data transfers. The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) publishes the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata. Many organizations within and outside of the federal government have adopted the FGDC metadata standard and are using automated indexing and serving mechanisms to provide access to their holdings through the Internet. Visit the FGDC Clearinghouse to learn more about how metadata is used in clearinghouses and to search for other data sets. Most of the material for the conterminous United States was collected from James Trumbull's "Coal Fields of the United States, Conterminous United States" map (sheet 1, 1960). The Gulf Coast region was updated using generalized, coal-bearing geology obtained from State geologic maps. The Alaska coal fields were collected from Farrell Barnes's "Coal Fields of the United States, Alaska" map (sheet 2, 1961). Purpose: These data are intended for geographic display and analysis at the National level, and for large regional areas. The data should be displayed and analyzed at scales appropriate for 1:5,000,000-scale data. No responsibility is assumed by the U.S. Geological Survey in the use of these data.
