Trail types include rail-trails, roadside trails, motorized and non-motorized trails, and nationally designated trails to include the Appalachian Trail. Other recreational data included as part of the State Trail Plan are the Hatfield-McCoy Recreation Area and the Amtrak commuter and excursion trains. RAIL-TRAILS: Non-motorized multi-use trails on abandoned rail corridors, converted to public trail use. Typically level and smooth, suitable for all ages and abilities. ROADSIDE TRAILS: Trails that use a road right-of-way corridor. This could be a parallel off-road path, a paved road shoulder, or bike lanes on the road. NON-MOTORIZED TRAILS: Trails that are typically single-track through mountainous terrain. These trails will allow one or more of the following: bicycles, horses, or hikers. MOTORIZED TRAILS: Trails that allow ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles), motorcycles, or four-wheel-drive vehicles. Some motorized trails will also allow non-motorized trail use. NATIONALLY DESIGNATED TRAILS: Trails that have applied for and received national designation, such as the National Scenic Trail & National Recreational Trail. HATFIELD-MCCOY RECREATION AREA: A 9-county region in southwestern WV that provides managed multi-use trail systems for both motorized & non-motorized trail users. WVGISTC 05 Feb 03
