Frequently-anticipated questions:

What does this data set describe?

Title: Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge Boundary Data
Abstract:
National Wildlife Refuges are federal lands managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). The primary source for boundary information is the USFWS Realty program (status maps, legal surveys). An effort by the USFWS Region 5 (northeast states - ME, NH,VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, PA, NJ, MD, DE, WV, VA) Realty Division, Cartography and Spatial Data Services Branch has resulted in digital refuge boundaries for all refuges in the northeast at a scale of 1:24,000.

  7. How does the data set describe geographic features?

    Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
Refuge boundaries define areas that are approved by the U.S. Congress for acquisition into the National Wildlife Refuge System, or are currently owned by USFWS. Arcs are coded with an item "boundary"with the type of boundary line; polygons are coded with an item "status" that describes their ownership status. See "Service Lands Boundary Data SOP."

Why was the data set created?

The intended application of the data is to serve as a spatial reference of refuge boundaries for other data layers in GIS and mapping applications. It is specifically not intended to be used as a land survey or representation of land for conveyance or tax purposes. For Survey data, please contact USFWS, Region 5, Realty Office, Surveys Branch.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

RE status map (source 1 of 1)
YSFWS, Region 5, Refuges and Wildlife Divisio, 197706, Canaan Valley NWR Status Map: National Wildlife Refuge Status Maps N/A, USFWS, Hadley, Massachusetts.

    Type_of_Source_Media: mylar
    Source_Scale_Denominator: 24000
    Source_Contribution: status information

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 11-Jul-2000 (process 1 of 1)
Status maps were registered to geographic coordinates, boundaries were digitized and labeled. Digital files were updated using survey and collateral data, then stepped through 3 levels of quality-control review for spatial and thematic accuracy. Complete process description can be found in "Service Lands Boundary Data SOP".

Data sources used in this process:

    • RE Status Map

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

Digital refuge boundaries are plotted with arc and polygon attributes, then compared to USFWS Realty status maps, survey documents, and collateral information for coding accuracy. Three levels of quality-control review are conducted (Cartography and Spatial Data Services, Realty Management Branch, Refuge Staff) with corrections being incorporated after each review until the dataset is deemed error-free. See "Service Lands Boundary Data Standard Operating Procedure".

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

Digital refuge boundaries are verified against USGS 1:24,000-scale,7.5' DLG, DRG, or 1:12,000-scale DOQQ data such as roads, hydrography, or plotted at 1:24,000 scale and overlayed on USGS 7.5' maps. Data are stored in ArcInfo double precision.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

All boundaries were digitized for exterior fee-titled, USFWS owned lands, acquired tracts, and areas approved for USFWS acquisition. Plots are generated and quality-control reviewed for omission and commission digitizing errors.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

All polygons are closed and adjusted to the most accurate geographic features, usually on a USGS 7.5' topographic quad. All dangling arcs, undershoots, and overshoots have been removed.

How can someone get a copy of the data set?

Are there legal restrictions on access or use of the data?

Access_Constraints: None
Use_Constraints:
Refuge boundary data were compiled for resource applications. It is inappropriate to use these data in legal situations, or other applications where spatial error cannot exceed the USGS 7.5-minute mapping standards.
