Local Resolution (1:4800) National Hydrographic Dataset

Project leads: Jackie Strager, Evan Fedorko, Kurt Donaldson

In conjunction with the United States Geologic Survey (USGS) office in Rolla, MO, the West Virginia GIS Technical Center (WVGISTC) and Natural Resource Analysis Center (NRAC) are building a local resolution National Hydrographic Dataset for West Virginia. Local resolution NHD would ultimately map every surface water feature in the state at a high level of detail, while also providing a framework for many water resource applications.

The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is a comprehensive digital spatial dataset, designed and distributed by USGS, that maps and describes the nation's surface water features, including streams, rivers, lakes, swamps, and constructed waterways. The NHD is currently complete at two different spatial scales for West Virginia: Medium resolution (1:100,000 scale) and High resolution (1:24,000 scale, to correspond with USGS topographic maps). Local resolution NHD refers to larger scale datasets that may be developed in the future following the NHD data framework to provide even greater levels of detail. In West Virginia's case, the data being used to build a new NHD dataset was collected from the 2003 SAMB aerial photography at 1:4,800 scale.

This website contains a variety of technical resources. This website will also serve as a news portal and contain information about the project's progress and direction. Below you will find two images, both general sources of information. The first is a status graphic, a visual representation of the progress of the project. The date the status graphic was last updated is printed in the upper left hand corner of the image. The second image is an informational handout provided to the attendees of the 2006 West Virginia GIS Forum and Workshops.
